Why a Breast Reduction?
or Reduction Mammoplasty
The objective of breast reduction is to decrease the size of the breasts; women who have large breasts may encounter problems as a result of the weight and size of the breasts, back pain, neck, shoulders, and / or submammary skin irritation. The size reduction is also done to improve the appearance of them. Some young girls suffer the development of virginal hypertrophy that requires a reduction in volume.
Before the surgery
A medical history is required to assess the general health of the patient. Posterior breasts are reviewed to determine the most effective surgical method. Mammograms or X-rays and photographs are taken. Pre-operative instructions include eliminating certain aspirin-containing medications a few weeks before surgery to minimize the risk of excessive bleeding. Birth control pills must be temporarily stopped. The surgeon may prescribe some antibiotics to prevent any infection.
Where is the surgery performed?
In an operating room in a sterile environment, with a medical team that will take care of the whole process.
About the anesthesia
This surgery is generally performed under epidural anesthesia and along with oral or intravenous sedatives.
Surgery
The most common method uses a three-part incision: The first surrounds the areola, the second one, a vertical incision from the bottom of the areola to the crease, and the third is a horizontal incision in the crease along the waist.
After removing excess tissue, fat and skin, the areola is reduced and placed in the highest position, which remain attached. At this point ultrasonic liposuction is often used to shape the contours of the sides of the breasts. One day of hospitalization is required. Sometimes you have to leave drains that are removed later.
After surgery
Your surgeon will prescribe medications for any pain or discomfort you may have, as well as antibiotics to prevent infection. Rest and limited activities are recommended. The surgeon will tell you when you can return to your normal activities.
Breast reduction produces a significant change in body image, and the patient feels more comfortable for a greater breasts proportion with the rest of his body. The scars are visible up to almost a year after the intervention, after which the scars will generally become less visible.
